Home / Case Study / Ganges Rotated As Per Vastu
Claude Wetley has written about Indian architectural crafts that the great craft heritage of India has been neglected. Most of the modern buildings despite their grandeur are adverse due to India's monsoon winds, weather, hydropower and vertical form sunlight. Vastushastra ensures identification of the building with all the above effects as well as various cosmic energies and the magnetism flowing between the poles of the earth itself. To understand the richness of engineering of ancient India, it is enough to understand the true meaning of the mythology of the descent of the Ganges. In ancient times, the part of Tibet was called Swargalok (Heaven). Therefore, when the Pandavas went for ascension, their path went from Himalayas to Tibet. The Puranas state that the Ganges first flowed into the heaven. King Bhagirath diverted his stream from heaven and brought it to India.
Sir William Wilcox, referring to this in his speech at the University of Kolkata in 1935 on ancient irrigation systems and current problems, stated that the physical truths related to the descent and regulation of the Ganga have been expressed in spiritual language by Bhagiratha in the Mahabharata and mythological texts. Every canal that turns south, be it the River Bhagirathi or the Mathganga Canal, is basically that canal. They are all dug parallel and have symmetry. While designing the canal system of the country, Sir William Wilcox was surprised to see that while the dead river is mentioned in the map, it seems appropriate to replace it in the canal system.
Scholar of Hydropower Engineering in Ancient India Prof. Bhim Chandra Chatterjee writes that four generations of the state tradition of Ayodhya remained devoted to bringing the Ganges from the Himalayas relentlessly and that the great Bhagirath succeeded in descending the Ganges. The flow of the Ganges was reversed towards the Bay of Bengal. The Ganges was rotated in front of the metropolis Varanasi. According to the principle of Vaastu Shastra, it was oriented towards North and two branches named Varuna and Assi were taken out so that the excess water could flow away.
Neither such a unique example of stopping floods is available anywhere in the world, nor can anyone deny it. In order to give continuous religious, commercial and royal importance to ancient Kashi and present-day Varanasi, the flow of Ganga was planned from south to north in a planned manner. According to Vastushastra, the glory of a city or person settling on the west bank of water, flowing northward remains for generations. Very few people know that Varanasi is the first planned city in the world and continuously inhabited after establishment.
